This Month At Kreav (Aug 2010) |
|
I am off to China in a couple of weeks, so I am trying to get all my preparation completed. This involves organising my visit itinery and preparing material for the books I will create whilst I am doing a Red Gate Gallery artistic residency in Beijing (www.redgategallery.com). At this point I am thinking of calling the body of work I create "The Beijing Scrolls". However, the work might evolve differently and so the name may have to change.
At the end of October I will be having an open studio in Beijing showing some of the work I make during the residency. I will also be showing and discussing my work at the Beijing Bookworm (www.beijingbookworm.com). Currently, I am busy doing some screenprinting to incorporate in the books I make while in China.
I recently did a very interesting workshop with Elke Ahokas who showed me how to make Carolingian (about 9th Century) books. Here are two books I made.

We are making great progress with our new book "The Veil Of Isis". The illustrations are finished, but we are still working on the text. Our new edition of "How To Write Specifications" is also now ready for publishing.
In June the international exhibition of artists' books I curated for the ACT Writers Centre was a great success. The exhibition was called "The Story Is The Thing" and it was held at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre. It was very well attended and got excellent reviews from those who attended.
I also exhibited a book called "Behind Cambridge Doors" in the exhibition. In Cambridge last year, I took the photos of 22 different lion headed door knockers. In the book I exhibited, the photos are printed on silk and behind each is a short story I wrote about the person who lives in that house.
We recently purchased the beautiful 2 volume Highgrove Florilegium published by Addison Publications. The magnificent books contain paintings (by the world's top botanical artists) of the plants growing at Prince Charles estate. Here is a picture of me unwrapping one of the books.
I am now starting to prepare for my September residency at the RedGate Gallery in Beijing. I am learning a few basic Mandarin words and also preparing some material to take with me.

The new Fantasy Park book (The Hunt) is now available on Amazon. We are still working on The Veil Of Isis and we are also doing a new edition of How To Write Specifications.
Next month I am exhibiting a new artist's book in Sydney at Gallery Red. The book is called Laugh or Scream and contains some of my linocut prints.
The exhibition of artists' books that I am curating for the ACT Writers Centre is developing well. The theme of the exhibition is The Story Is The Thing and I have received entries from all around the world. It promises to be a most exciting exhibition and it will be held in the gallery at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre which overlooks a lake. I have almost finished the book, Behind Cambridge Doors, which I am making for the exhibition. Soon, I will post on this website the collection of short stories that I wrote for the book.
As usual I have been busy travelling and neglecting updating this website. I visited the beautiful Yarra Valley in Victoria and then went to Sydney to see some interesting exhibitions, including a Utamaro exhibition. Next week I am off to Byron Bay for a week which will be a mixture of family visits and artistic activities.
Here is a picture of me in the beautiful Yarra Valley.

Not surprisingly, the new year is busy. We have published Fantasy Park Book 2: The Hunt and it will be available for purchase on Amazon in late February.
Good progress is being made with our new publication The Veil Of Isis. It is the fascinating story of Madame Blavatsky who lived in the Victorian Era and was claimed to be the mother of the new age. Was she a great mystic or a great charlatan?
I am busy organising an exhibition of artists' books for the Australian Capital Territory Writers' Centre. The exhibition will be held at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre and artists' books will have a story focus.
I am also creating a book for the exhibition. It is based around the photos I took of lion headed door knockers in Cambridge last year. Behind each door in the book will be a short story about the person who lives in the house. Many of the stories are interconnected. I will publish some pictures of the book soon.

This Month At Kreav (Nov/Dec 09) |
|
The year has flown passed so quickly that I missed posting up last month's information. So I have decided to combine two month's postings together.
We have started working on our new book to be published - "The Veil Of Isis" It is the story of a great character of the Victorian era called Madame Blavatsky. More about that as the book proceeds.
I have now finished my handmade book "The Dragons Whiskers Book" and here are some photos of it. I made the paper and also the felt cover.
At the moment I am working on oriental themes with my handmade books in preparation for spending a month next year making books in China. I have been dyeing some silks with dyes made from plants and also doing some relief printing, which I will use in the books.
